The first set started off going back and forth, but Dallas Baptist began to take some control from the Jets. Point by point the Jets worked its way back to a 22-22 game. There were two more ties, 23-23 and 24-24, but the Patriots took advantage of Newman's three consecutive errors resulting in a 27-25 loss for the Jets. Leaders for the Jets in the first set included Schmidtberger and Dotson with four kills each. Junior
Hannah Melichar had one solo-block and two block-assists.
The Jets led most of the second set with Dotson's seven kills, Schmidtberger's five and Melichar's five. Newman led 24-19, only needing one point to claim the set win. The Patriots did not let that faze the team as they took the reigns and overcame the Jets 28-26.
The third set transpired to be another tantalizing game. This time Dallas Baptist led the way, leading 19-12. Newman forced the Patriots to commit five errors coming back to tie the game 20-20. It was a hard fought battle to the end, but the Patriots beat the Jets 26-24. Schmidtberger led the set with four kills, while Melichar had two block-assists.
Newman finished the night with 40 kills coming from Dotson (13), Schmidtberger (13) and Melichar (8).
Gabby Loxterman recorded 36 assists.
The loss moves Newman to a 3-11 overall record, and 1-6 in Heartland play. Newman will host St. Edward's Saturday, Oct. 13 at 12 p.m. for the Pink Out game.
