Goal in Final Minutes Secure 1-0 Victory for Jets

ABILENE, Texas - A goal scored in the 86th minute mark of the Newman women's soccer match at McMurry Thursday afternoon led the Jets to a 1-0 victory against the War Hawks. Freshman Bonnie Charlton scored the goal, but Tori Hostick and Megan Hostick showed their senior leadership firing energy into the team.

The first half at Edwards Field in Abilene, Texas did not produced goals for either team. McMurry fired two of the three first-half shots in the first six minutes, but freshman Kayleigh Renfro was able to make the save on both. Newman's Charlton and Channing Kelley took the next two shots of the match, but Shelby Sova of McMurry earned the saves. Two more shots were taken by the Jets totaling four in the first half; one from Kelley followed by Holli Schletzbaum. Kelley's second attempt at a goal in the 37th minute barely missed hitting the post. Leading into the second half the score was tied 0-0.

"The first half we couldn't connect anything. Our first touch was off. We corrected that in the second half; we looked very dangerous. The Hostick twins showed a lot of leadership in the second half; Megan (Hostick) brought positive energy when she came into the game," stated Head Coach Victor Garcia-Bebek.

That energy brought five more Newman shots in the second half. Freshman Oliva Hull sent a shot high with only 55 seconds into play. The next shot for the Jets came 10 minutes later with a header from freshman Harriet Jakeman, but went wide. In the 76th minute, senior Alli Zingo had a shot on goal, but McMurry drew the save. Shortly following, M. Hostick shot wide. The Jets took a Blair Terry corner kick in the 86th minute that led to a goal by Charlton. Newman secured the 1-0 victory.

"Bonnie Charlton and Blair Terry played well. In general, it was a good perfomance from a thin roster of 15 players," said Coach Garcia-Bebek.

The Jets had nine shots with five shots on goal.

The victory gives Newman a 4-6 overall record. Saturday, Oct. 6 will be the next game for the Jets at Texas-Permian Basin with a 12 p.m. kickoff time.
