WICHITA - Newman volleyball hosted conference opponent St. Mary's on Thursday evening. After the Rattlers took the first two sets, the Jets forced the match to go to four sets winning the third set, but could not hold off the Rattlers losing 3-1.
Haley Dotson earned the first kill of the evening from a
Gabby Loxterman assist beginning the night with a 1-0 lead. The Jets could not continue the hitting streak as the team only recorded eight kills compared to the 14 kills the Rattlers had. Newman loss the first set, 25-18.
Once again, Dotson had the first kill of the second set giving the Jets 1-0 lead. Newman had eight kills for the set losing 25-15.
The third set was the story changer for the night. A Dotson service ace tied the score 7-7, from there the Jets soared never allowing the Rattlers to take the lead.
Katelyn Schmidtberger led Newman with five kills while Loxterman dished out 10 assists. Newman forced the fourth set winning 25-20.
In the final set, Newman had a total of 12 kills. That was not enough for the 16 kills by St. Mary's that won the set 25-17.
For the night Newman had a attach percentage of .140 with 41 kills, 38 assists, 33 digs and five blocks.
Newman moves to a 3-9 overall record and 1-4 in conference play. The Jets will host Texas A&M International at 12 p.m. on Saturday during the 6th Annual Fall Alumni Sports Reunion.
