ODESSA, Texas - With the help of two
Blair Terry goals the Newman women's soccer team beat Texas-Permian Basin on Saturay afternoon, 2-1. The lady Jets finished the week road series 2-0.
"Again we didn't have a good start. It took us a while to start playing, but once we did we started to connect passes. We were patient and everything started to happen," stated Coach
Victor Garcia-Bebek.
The Jets only had three shots in the first half, but all were on target. The shots were take by Terry, Bonnie Chartlon, and
Sarenity Gomez. Texas-Permian Basin had nine shots while scoring one in the 37th minute mark. Going into the second half the Falcons led 1-0.
With fifteen minutes of play in the second half Texas-Permian Basin drew a yellow card to give Newman a penalty kick for Terry. Shortly following, Terry scored another goal right above the goalkeeper's hands. After the 68th minute mark, the Jets led 2-1.
Newman finished with 14 shots, seven on goal.
Kayleigh Renfro allowed one goal while saving three for the Jets.
Coach Garcia-Bebek comments on player perfomances, "
Blair Terry played with swollen ankle and still managed to score two goals...that's charcter!
Jordan DeBoer and Ali Petrillose commanded the defense.
Alli Zingo and
Olivia Hull won every single 50/50 ball in the middle of the field. The forwards finished the game exhausted because of running to every single ball. Everyone did a great job this weekend."
"We have had so many things not going our way; an early ACL tear, three concussions, injuries, etc. All of that has made us stronger group. This weekend on the road was dedicated to four players who are injured and could not come with us," said Coach Garcia-Bebek.
The ladies will continue to travel to Austin, Texas to play St. Edward's on Oct. 11 with a 1 p.m. kickoff time.
