The Crusaders took the first basket of the night, but a two-pointer by
Marquis Cuyler at the 19-minute mark gave the Jets their footing.
Trae Beck drained two back-to-back shots from behind the arc and assisted in a dunk by
Shamar Acuay to give Newman (2-0, 0-0 Heartland) a 9-4 lead early in the first half. A two-point Crusader basket by Bryce Birtell got Manhattan Christian within eight at the 13:25 mark, but they couldn't fight off the Jets. Newman senior
Mike Falvo's three-point basket at the buzzer sent the Jets off to the locker room with a dominating 52-15 lead at the half.
Newman continued to charge ahead in the second half, and a dunk by Shamar Acquay at the 10:40 mark gave the Jets a 72-25 advantage. A pair of free throws from
Chris Thomas with three minutes remaining gave the Jets a 63-point margin, their largest of the night. Junior
Richard Waldron walked the ball across half-court to run out the clock, making the final score 99-39 Newman.
As a team, Newman shot 56.9 percent (37-65) from the field, while connecting on 55.6 percent (15-27) of their three-point attempts. The Jets had five scorers in the double-figures (Acuay, Beck, Cuyler, Pleasant, McCarthy). Newman out-rebounded Manhattan Christian 38-31, holding the Crusaders to 30.6 percent (15-49) from the field and 12.5 percent (1-8) from downtown.
The Jets return to action next Tuesday, as they travel to Pittsburg, Kansas to take on the Gorillas of Pittsburgh State University.
