Jets Rattled Against No. 4 in Conference

SAN ANTONIO - The Jets were rattled by No. 4 in the Heartland Conference, St. Mary's on Thursday. St. Mary's Rattlers, still battling it out for the final tournament spot, remain just ahead of Texas A&M International and were ready for the encounter with the Jets. The Jets who were also fired up for the game, challenged St Mary's all the way until finally being out played into the fourth set to lose the match, 3-1.

The Jets found themselves seven points down at one point in the first set. However, the ladies who made the trip to play the tough opposing home side dug in and marginally missed out on the set point 26-24.

The second set opened with the Jets slightly behind at 8 - 5, but the Rattlers then begun to open the gap and extended its lead to 23-14. The Jets again managed to pull themselves back into the game showing good determination as they made it difficult for the Rattlers to snatch the remaining two points, pulling back five points as they did so to end the second set at a 25-19 loss.

The Rattlers leading the Jets with the first two set wins were then slow to catch its second wind as the team trailed up until the 16 point mark. From that point on, the teams then continued to battle it out for the set until once more the Jets found themselves trailing at the 25 point milestone. This time however, at 25-24, the Jets went into overdrive and took off with the set winning with an entertaining score line of 29-27.

The score now at two sets to one, Newman was back in the game. The Jets still had some work to do if they intended on taking the victory home with them. The Rattlers with the support of the home crowd seemed to find new energy in the fourth set and ended up taking the match.


Newman's record stands at 2-10 in conference play and 4-16 overall. The Jets will next take on Texas A&M International on Nov. 3. The game will take place at noon in Laredo, Texas.
