Box Score Pittsburg, Kansas- The Newman men's basketball team improved their season record to 3-0 on Tuesday night, as they traveled to Pittsburg State University, defeating the Gorillas at their home court 89-79.
Bobby Wesley led all scorers with 20 points.
The Jets got things rolling from the very start with a three-point basket from Junior
Trae Beck at the 19:36 mark. A jumper by
Shamar Acuay gave the Jets a 10-point lead with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. The Gorillas tried to make way for a comeback, and a pair of free throws by Marky Nolen got Pitt State within two with five minutes to play. Newman answered and remained in charge of the game, heading to the locker rooms with a 45-38 lead at half time.
Newman continued to push ahead in the second half, and a downtown basket by
Bobby Wesley made the score 55-41 at the 17:43 mark. The Jets took their largest lead, a 20-point margin, with 11:54 remaining in the game. The game ended with a layup from Gorilla Sam Pugh, but it wasn't enough as Newman took the game 89-79.
As a team, Newman shot 41.8 percent (28-67) from the field, while draining 44.4 percent (8-19) from behind the arc.
Bobby Wesley led the Jets with 20 points, and fellow teammates
Marquis Cuyler and
Frankie Drayton were close behind with a respective 14 and 11 points for the game. Newman outrebuonded the Gorillas 30-27 and held Pitt State to 42.6 percent (23-54) from the field.
The Jets return to action this saturday as they take on the Tigers of Fort Hays State University at 4 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
