Box Score Wichita, Kansas- The Newman men's basketball team remains undefeated as they narrowly escaped the Tigers of Fort Hays State University 80-78 inside Fugate Gymnasium this Saturday.
Shamar Acuay led all scorers with 29 points.
The Tigers got off to a roaring start in the first half, taking an easy 11-0 lead in the first few minutes.
Shamar Acuay got the Jets on the board with a lay-up at the 14:30 mark. The Jets quickly turned the game around, going on an uncontested 16-point run that included a characteristic three-point basket by junior
Trae Beck. Newman never let go of their lead and headed to the locker rooms with 43-35 advantage.
The Jets kept hold of a narrow lead in the first few minutes of the second half that strengthened to 11 points after a lay-up by
Ryan McCarthy at the 15:11 mark. A pair of free throws by
Shamar Acuay gave the Jets their largest lead of the night, 71-56, with six minutes remaining in the game. The Tigers continued to battle their way back into the game, but a final three point basket by Craig Nicholson wasn't enough to hold off Newman's victory of 80-78.

Darrell Traylor added 17 points for Newman, included 8-9 from the charity stripe.
As a team, the Jets shot 36.23 percent (25-69) from the floor and 68.57 percent (24-35) from the line. Newman outrebounded the Tigers 43-40.
With the victory, the Jets remain a perfect 4-0 on the season. Newman returns to action next Tuesday as they take on Emporia State University inside Fugate Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
