Scouting St. Edward's...
The Hilltoppers come into Thursday's game with an overall record of 10-13, and a 2-9 mark in Heartland Conference play. Newman defeated the Hilltoppers on Jan. 21, 90-88 OT in Austin, Texas. St. Edward's is coming off of a 70-65 loss to Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday. The Hilltoppers have lost eight of its last 10 games. St. Ed's is led by junior forward, Shimeek Johnson (18.1 ppg). The Albany, N.Y. native is averaging a team-high 17.1 points per game in conference play. Johnson is joined in double-figures by Khaliq Gross (16.7 ppg) and Zilijan Jones (12.4 ppg). Gross netted a season-high 30 points on Dec. 18 against Henderson State. Jones has scored in double-figures in 13 games this season.
Last Time Out...
The Newman men's basketball team lost its fourth-straight game on Saturday, in a 71-58 loss at Texas A&M-International in Laredo, Texas. Shamar Acuay led the Jets with 17 points.
First-Half Notes:
-Newman fell in a hole early, as TAMIU's Brian Schaefer scored four points in the first minute of play.
-Shamar Acuay's lay-up sparked a 7-0 Newman run over the ensuing four minutes to give the Jets a 7-4 edge with 15:36 left in the period.
-An Acuay jumper extended the lead to 13-6 at the 9:20 mark, but an Ian Salter lay-up ten seconds later ignited an 11-0 run to give the Dustdevils a 17-13 lead with 5:30 on the clock.
-A pair of Kalub Long free-throws ended the Newman drought, but TAMIU scored four-straight points to widen its lead to 21-15 with 3:50 remaining on the clock.
-Evan Matteson connected on a lay-up at the 1:17 mark, but an Acuay lay-up with 1:09 left in the period was the last points, as the Dustdevils took a 28-24 lead going into intermission.
Second-Half Notes:
-The Jets came out firing to begin the second-half, as an Eric Saunders jumper paced an 8-1 Newman run to give the Jets a 34-29 lead with 17:34 left in regulation.
-TAMIU replied with a 5-0 spurt to re-gain the lead, 35-34 at the 14:27 mark.
-A Darrell Traylor jumper 21 seconds later gave Newman the lead, but the Jets went cold from the field, being held scoreless for four minutes.
-The Dustdevils used this period to go on a 10-0 run, and took a 45-36 lead with 10:27 left in the game.
-TAMIU extended its lead to 49-38, following a Matteson dunk at the 8:33 mark.
-An Acuay jumper at the 6:19 mark, pulled the Jets to within 51-44, but that was the closest Newman could get.
-James Silvie gave the Dustdevils their biggest lead of the game at the 3:19 mark, 67-52, as the Jets were out-scored 21-10 over the final six minutes of the game en route to a 71-58 defeat.
Acuay was joined in double-figures by Eric Saunders and Darrell Traylor, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively. As a team, Newman shot 35.5 percent (22-62) from the field, and only connected on 13.3 percent (2-15) from beyond-the-arc. The Jets out-rebounded the Dustdevils 39-35.
