WICHITA - The Newman men's tennis team grabbed its first dual match win of the spring season with an 8-1 victory over Tabor Friday afternoon. The Jets swept doubles play and held off a pair of Tabor challenges for the win.

Newman jumped out to a 3-0 lead after dominating doubles play. Igor Ozegovic and Kevin Klein started things off with an 8-0 win over Tabor's David Simmet and Nathan Panttaja. Jarred Ferris and Chris Copenhaver gave Newman its second doubles victory with an 8-3 win over Kelyn Vix and Tyler Dort. Sophomore transfer Evgeniy Kim and freshman Mitchel Whitmer defeated Tabors's Jeremy Reiswig and Sam Brucks, 8-5, to close out doubles, and gave Newman a 3-0 match lead.

Ozegovic opened singles play for the Jets with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Simmet followed by a 6-1, 6-3 win by Copenhaver over Panttaja, securing the dual match win for the Jets with a 5-0 lead. Kim notched a 6-1, 6-2 win over Vix while Klein added a 6-0, 6-0 shut-out against Dort. Sam Brucks recorded the only Tabor victory when he defeated Wherritt 7-6, 6-3 but Ferris finished off the Blue Jays with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Reiswig to give the Jets the 8-1 dual match victory.

With the win Newman improves to 1-0 in spring dual match competition. They will return action Friday Feb. 24 when they travel to Bentonville, Ark. for a dual against Harding. Action is set to begin at 12 p.m.
