Jets Open the Season With a Solid 2-0 Shutout

WICHITA, Kan. - The Newman women's soccer team got off to a great start for their 2012 campaign. The Jets came out victorious over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday night at Wilkins Field. Senior Mallory Hurst led the Jets with two assists in the 2-0 shutout.

-To open the Jets campaign Mallory Hurst found herself wide on the outside of the box before passing the ball back across for Olivia Hull to slide in a claim for her first goal of the season after just 10 minutes of play.

-The second goal came in the 37th minute after Hurst once again got an assist to her name with a dangerous cross into the box, finding Megan Hostick who pulled off a step-over before finishing well by shooting the ball over the goalkeeper.

-The visitors failed to test the Jets goalkeepers consistently, but the opportunities they did get were handled well by the goalkeepers. Haley Borchers started the game and Kayleigh Renfro finished it as she stepped onto the field at the half time interval, quick to show that she was prepared and ready to keep the shutout going as she dived to her right to catch a header after just one minute of play.

-Speaking with Coach Garcia-Bebek after the game he seemed pleased with the performance that the girls gave. He noted that his more experienced players obviously helped solidify the young talent that he has.

-Emily Arden also had a terrific game for the Jets as her composure grew with every touch, eliminating through balls, as well as successfully bringing down the ball and looking to possess at every opportunity.

-Another anchor for the Jets tonight was none other than Junior Jordan DeBoer who also cut out a critical through ball which could have led to an inviting opportunity for the Rangers.

The Jets will travel to Northwest Missouri State on Sunday, September 2 for a 1 p.m. game.
