Hannah Melichar and
Sarah Waterson logged the most kills for Newman with nine a piece.
Newman stayed within three to four points in the beginning of the first set, but two six-point rallies later in the set secured the 25-14 victory for Emporia State. The Jets had eight kills compared to the Hornets 17; middle hitter Melichar led with three kills.
Waterson fired up the Jets scoring the first point of the second set with a kill. The energy from Newman gave the team 14 kills, one behind Emporia State. It was a close set, but the nine errors commited by the Jets gave the Hornets the extra edge winning 25-20.
The Hornets recorded 10 more kills than Newman's eight holding the Jets to a 25-11 loss for the final set.
It was a stellar night for Waterson as she killed nine of her 13 attempts with one error resulting in a .615 hitting percentage.
The Jets move to a 3-8 overall record. The next game for the Newman volleyball team will be Oct. 4 at Fugate Gymnasium against St. Mary's.
