WICHITA - Thursday night the Newman women's soccer team faced conference opponent and #3 nationally ranked St. Edward's. The Hilltoppers stomped the Jets 4-0 at Wilkins Field. Newman's record fell to 1-2 in Heartland Conference play and 3-5 overall.
The Jets defense fought hard as the Hilltoppers had seven shots in the first 17 minutes of play not allowing a single goal, but a corner kick for St. Edward's in the 30th minute of action led to the first goal of the game. The Hilltoppers led 1-0.
Newman's offense never had an energy burst in the first half recording zero shots.
After the start of the second half,
Kelsea Louton had the first shot of the match for the Jets in the 48th minute mark, but a save by Hilltopper Danielle Licarione prevented the goal. In the 57th minute the Hilltoppers earned its second goal of the night. Quickly following, Newman freshman
Harriet Jakeman tried to break St. Edward's 2-0 lead with a shot, but missed wide right.
At the 67th minute mark the Hilltoppers pushed the lead to 3-0; finally, committing it's last goal of the night with five minutes left in play. St. Edward's went on to win the game 4-0.
The Jets return to action hosting Dallas Baptist at Wilkins Field on Saturday, Sept. 29 with a start time of 12 p.m.
