Oklahoma City, Okla. - The No. 18 Jets used a 27-8 run in the final 10 minutes of the game to erase a 10-point deficit and pulled away for a 74-65 win on the road at Oklahoma Christian on Thursday night (Jan. 3) at the Eagles' Nest. The Jets upped their record to 10-1, while OCU dropped to 7-5.
Newman trailed by 10 points at the 9:36 mark of the contest, but outscored the Eagles, 27-8, in the final minutes. The Jets took the lead at 62-61 with 4:30 left after
Shamar Acuay completed a three-point play. After an Eagle jumper to regain the lead, the Jets went on top for good on a basket by
Darrell Traylor with 3:12 remaining. The Jets put the game away from there, scoring 10 of the final 12 points, including two important 3-pointers from Acuay and Traylor. After going ahead by five at 70-65 with a minute remaining, Acuay's strong defense forced a turnover, and
Bobby Wesley made two important free throws with 33 seconds remaining. A
Connor Walker basket gave the Jets their final points for the 74-65 win.
In the first half, the Jets pushed out to a 12-point lead at the 6:43 mark on a 3 from
Mike Falvo. With the Jets up 28-18 with 4:02 remaining in the first stanza, the Eagles closed on a 10-2 run to keep the game close at 30-28 going into halftime. The start of the second half was fairly even until OCU pushed out to the 10-point advantage midway through the half.
Darrell Traylor totaled a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs.
Shamar Acuay also scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Elhad Emerllahu scored 12 points.
Will Reinke of OCU went off for 35 points and 16 rebounds, both game highs.
The Jet defense held the Eagles to 34.5 percent (20-58) from the field, including 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) in the first half. NU shot 38.8 percent and was 45.5 percent in the second half.
The Jets continue its two-game roadtrip with a visit to Dallas Baptist on Saturday (Jan. 5) at 2 p.m.
