Trae Beck's hot shooting from behind the 3-point line pushed the No. 18 Newman men's basketball team to an 82-69 road win at Dallas Baptist on Saturday (Jan. 5). The Jets remain perfect in the Heartland Conference, improving to 3-0 and are 11-1 overall. The Patriots dropped to 2-2 in the conference and 5-7 overall.
Trae Beck tied a career high in points, putting in 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. The seven 3-pointers made are the most made this season by a Jet. Three other Jets hit double figures.
Marquis Cuyler and
Ryan Mesh each scored 11 points, and
Elhad Emerllahu added 10 points. Cuyler pulled down eight rebounds to lead Newman.
Nick Fox led Dallas Baptist with 19 points and six rebounds.
The Jets led most of the game, only trailing once when it was 2-0 DBU early on. Cuyler quickly gave the Jets their first lead at 3-2 with a 3-pointer at the 18:41 mark of the first half. Newman held the lead for the rest of the contest. In the first half, the Jets pushed the margin to as high as 18 points at 33-15 on a jumper from Emerllahu with 7:46 left in the half. NU led by only 10, 40-30, after the Patriots ended the half with a 9-2 run in the final 3:52 of the first half.
Newman started the second half strong, scoring the first eight points. Cuyler started the run with a quick dunk 6 seconds into the half, then Beck made back-to-back 3s to push the lead to 48-30 less than 1 minute into the second half. With the Jets up 55-44, DBU used a 10-0 run to trail by one point at 55-54 at the 12:03 mark. Beck responded with two 3-pointers and
Darrell Traylor put in a layup to put the Jets back up by nine, 63-54, with 10:39 remaining. The Patriots did not get closer than seven points for the rest of the game as the Jets cruised to the 82-69 win.
The No. 18 Jets return home for two-straight Heartland Conference games. On Thursday (Jan. 10), NU welcomes Texas A&M International to Fugate Gymnasium for a 7:30 p.m. game then St. Mary's takes on the Jets on Saturday (Jan. 12) at 4 p.m.
