Box Score WICHITA – The Newman volleyball team had its seven-match winning streak snapped by Arkansas-Fort Smith on Thursday (Oct. 17) in a 3-0 (31-29, 25-16, 25-17) loss at Fugate Gymnasium. NU dropped to 11-7 on the season and 5-5 in the Heartland Conference. The Lions improved to 14-6 and 10-0 in the Heartland Conference.
In a close first set, NU opened up a three-point advantage at 21-18 with a kill by
Jeana Farruggia. A
Jarin Braithwait kill pushed the Lady Jets to set point at 24-22, but UAFS went on a 3-0 run to take a 25-24 lead, forcing NU into a timeout. With the score tied at 29-29, the Lions scored the last two points to win 31-29.
In sets two and three, it was all UAFS. The Lions ran out to a 25-16 win in set two, hitting .357, and won 25-17 in set three.
Braithwait led NU with nine kills, Farruggia added eight kills and
Gaylynn Jones tallied seven kills.
Alexus Litts had a team-high 21 assists, and Jones led NU with 10 digs.
Jordan Pickett finished with a match-high 16 kills for UAFS and hit .636.
The Lady Jets are back in action on Saturday (Oct. 19) against Dallas Baptist at 12 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
