Box Score WICHITA – Newman volleyball won in straight sets, 3-0, against St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 5) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Lady Jets won their third straight match and upped their record to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the Heartland Conference. The Rattlers dropped to 7-8 and 4-2 in the conference.
Although it was a straight-set win, each set was very close with NU winning by two points in each set. The Lady Jets won 31-29, 25-23 and 28-26.
After being tied at 17-17, NU went on a 5-1 run to go up 22-18 and force StMU into a timeout. The Rattlers came back with a 5-1 run of their own for a 23-23 tie. With the score tied at 29-29,
Gaylynn Jones put NU up 30-29 with a kill, and
Jeana Farruggia's service ace lifted the Lady Jets to a 31-29 set one win.
With a 19-19 score in the second set, NU went on another 5-1 run to get to set point at 24-20. After three Lady Jet errors, Maili Wright closed out the set with a kill and a 25-23 victory.
The Lady Jets pulled out to a 10-5 advantage in the third set after an
Alexus Litts service ace. The Rattlers went on a 4-0 run to make it 10-9, and NU took a timeout. StMU built a 19-15 lead, but the Lady Jets rallied to tie the set at 23-23. With the score knotted at 26-26, NU got a kill from Jones and a block from
Ashley Gonzalez to win the set, 28-26, and the match, 3-0.
Jones finished with a double-double with a match-high 18 kills and 14 digs.
Jeana Farruggia hit double digits in kills with 12 and hit .375. She also had a double-double adding 10 digs. Litts had a match-high 41 assists, and
Tori Alderson led NU with 18 digs.
The Lady Jets continue their four-match home stretch on Monday (Oct. 7), hosting Southwestern College at 7 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
