Volleyball Clinches Winning Season with 3-0 Victory

Box Score ALVA, Okla. – The Newman volleyball team clinched its first-ever winning season in the Division II era with a 3-0 victory at Northwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday (Nov. 14) at Percefull Fieldhouse. The Lady Jets improved their record to 14-12 and close out their season on Saturday (Nov. 16) against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Senior Day.
 
The Lady Jets cruised to an 8-2 advantage in the first set and never looked back. With the Lady Jets up 15-13, NU closed out the first set with a 10-2 run to win 25-15. A Gaylynn Jones service ace pushed NU to the set one win.
 
The Rangers had a chance to close out the second set, going up 24-22 and had two chances at set point. The Lady Jets took over from there, scoring four straight points to win the set 26-24. Jeana Farruggia started the run with a kill and blocks from Ashley Gonzalez (two), Farruggia and Jones lifted NU to the victory.
 
With the score tied at 10-10 in the third set, NU went on a 7-0 run to take a 17-10 advantage. The Lady Jets led 23-19 and put the match away with a Laura Hageman kill and then a Ranger error for the 25-19 set three win.
 
Jones totaled a match-high 13 kills and hit .444. Gonzalez hit double digits in kills with 11 and added five blocks. Setter Alexus Litts tallied a double-double with a match-high 37 assists and 18 digs. Tori Alderson and Molly Faragher added 11 digs each.
 
The 14 wins matches the season high for the Lady Jets since moving to NCAA Division II. NU went 14-16 (8-4 Heartland Conference) in the 2010 season.
 
The Lady Jets end their season on Saturday (Nov. 16) on Senior Day. NU takes on Oklahoma Panhandle State on 12 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
