Box Score Hays, Kan. – The Newman men's basketball fell in a high scoring game, 96-87, at Fort Hays State on Tuesday (Nov. 19) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Jets dropped to 2-2 on the season, and the Tigers improved to 4-0.
With the Jets down 16-12 at the 14:24 mark, the Tigers went on a 16-2 run to push the margin to 32-16 midway through the first half. FHSU held the 16-point margin into halftime, leading 54-38 at the break.
After the Tigers upped the score to a 20-point lead, the Jets cut the deficit in half to 10 at 60-50 on a
Jeremy Espinoza jumper with 14:09 remaining. The Jets trailed by only six points after a
Jack Pyle layup with 11:54 left made the score 64-58. FHSU quickly pushed the lead to 12 on back-to-back 3s from Jared Tadlock. The Tigers continued to hold the advantage in the 96-87 win.
NU's offense was very balanced with five Jets scoring in double figures.
Trae Beck led NU with 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range.
Jeremy Espinoza and
Landers Riddle each tallied 14 points. Riddle was 7-of-9 from the field.
Elhad Emerllahu scored 13 points.
Perryonte Smith totaled a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists, his first career double-double for the Jets.
Dwayne Brunson and Tomislav Gabric each finished with double-double for FHSU. Brunson had a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds. Gabric totaled 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The Jets travel to Washburn on Saturday (Nov. 23) for a 3 p.m. game in Topeka, Kan. at Lee Arena.
