Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Newman volleyball team won the first set, but lost three straight, falling 3-1 to St. Mary's on Thursday (Nov. 7) at Bill Greehey Arena. The Lady Jets dropped to 12-12 and 6-10 in the Heartland Conference.
The Lady Jets started strong, winning set one, 25-18. NU hit .306 in the set with 13 kills and only two errors, while StMU hit .167 with 13 kills and seven errors. After a 2-2 start, NU reeled off four straight points to go up 6-2 and force the Rattlers into a timeout.
Jarin Braithwait and
Shelby Zoglman both had kills during the run. StMU made a run of their own to tie the score at 14-14. With the score tied at 17-17, NU put the set away with an 8-1 run, including a kill from setter
Alexus Litts to lift the Lady Jets to the 25-18 win.
The second set was close early with the score tied at 7-7, but StMU went on a 9-0 spurt to take control of the set with a 16-7 advantage. The Rattlers won set two, 25-15.
In the third set, NU scored the first four points to go up 4-0 early. With the Lady Jets up 13-10, the Rattlers erased the deficit and took a seven-point lead with a 10-0 run to go up 20-13. StMU took set three, 25-19, to go up 2-1 in the match.
NU went up in the fourth set 18-13 with a quick 3-0 run. Three StMU errors helped the Lady Jets during the run. A 7-1 run from the home team gave them a 20-19 lead. Kills by

Ashley Gonzalez kept the Lady Jets in the set with the score tied at 22-22. The Rattlers scored three of the last four points to win the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
Gonzalez put down a match-high 15 kills for the Lady Jets and added three blocks. Jones totaled nine kills and 13 digs. Litts had a match-high 40 assists and her 17 digs gave her a double-double. Libero

NU plays its final road Heartland Conference match on Saturday (Nov. 9) at Texas A&M International at 12 p.m. in Laredo, Texas.
