Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's ended the first half on an 18-0 run and pulled away for an 89-70 victory over the Newman men's basketball team on Saturday (Dec. 21) at the Recreation and Convocation Center. The Jets fell to 3-8 and 0-3 in the Heartland Conference with the loss.
After a
Jack Pyle 3-pointer pulled the Jets to within two at 32-30 with 4:51 left in the first half, the host Hilltoppers scored 18 unanswered points to take a 50-30 advantage into halftime.
The Hilltoppers continued to control the game in the second half with the Jets only getting as close as 19 points, including the 89-70 final score.
Marquis Cuyler led NU with 16 points, including 3-of-5 shooting from 3.
Landers Riddle and
Jeremy Espinoza each added 12 points. The pair went an identical 4-from-6 from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
James Stukes scored a game-high 26 points for SEU on 10-of-14 shooting. He scored his 26 points in 22 minutes. Three other Hilltoppers were in double figures.
SEU shot 56.9 percent from the field, while NU shot 41.5 percent. The Hilltoppers held a 46-18 advantage in rebounding, including 33 defensive rebounds to 13 from NU.
The Jets return to action after the holiday break. NU takes on Oklahoma Panhandle State on Jan. 4, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Fugate Gymnasium
