WICHITA – The Newman men's tennis team got its first win of the spring season on Saturday (Feb. 16), defeating Tabor College, 6-3, at West Genesis. The Jets are now 2-5 on the season.
 
The Jets won two of the three doubles matches. Nei Dos Santos and Freddy Sachez won No. 1 doubles, 8-4, over David Simmet and Kelyn Vix. At No. 2 doubles, Ramon Nola and Jared Ferris defeated Tyler Dort and Nathan Panttaja by an 8-5 score. No. 3 doubles was the Jets only loss as Mitchel Whitmer and Jeff Wherritt dropped a close 9-7 match to Jake and Sam Brucks.
 
Newman won four of the six singles matches, including two by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Sanchez and Nola blanked both of their opponents at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Wherritt and Whitmer picked up straight set wins in their matches. Wherritt won No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-4, over Jake Brucks, and Whitmer won 6-4, 6-3 over Sam Brucks.
 
The Jets are back in action on Feb. 22 or 23 at Collin College.
