Jets Three-Match Winning Streak Snapped by UTPB, 7-2

AUSTIN, Texas – Newman men's tennis' three-match winning streak was snapped by Texas-Permian Basin, 7-2, on Saturday (March 16) in Austin, Texas. The match was the Heartland Conference opener for the Jets as they fell to 5-8 on the season and 0-1 in the Heartland Conference.
 
In doubles competition, the Jets won one of the three matches. The victory came at No. 1 doubles as Nei Dos Santos and Freddy Sanchez teamed up to get a 8-5 win. Ramon Nola and Jared Ferris dropped an 8-1 match at No. 2 doubles, and Jeff Wherritt and Mitchel Whitmer fell 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
 
The Jets took only one of the six single matches. No. 2 singles player Sanchez got the only win. He defeated Alvaro Sifuentes in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4. Nola took his match to a tiebreaker, but fell in a tight 12-0 score. He won the first set 6-2 and lost set two, 6-2. The Jets dropped the other four singles matches in straight sets.
 
Newman returns to the court tomorrow against St. Edward's at 1 p.m. in Austin, Texas.
