NORTH NEWTON, Kan. - The Newman men's tennis team won the final three singles matches to rally for a 5-4 win at Bethel College on Tuesday (Sept. 17).
After doubles play, the Jets were down 2-1. Bethel got wins at No.1 and No.2 doubles. Clinton Chlumsky and Jesse Voth-Gaeddert of BC defeated NU's duo of
Max Pyle and
Nei Dos Santos, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Logan Palenske and Chris Soosalu of BC won 8-6 against
Miguel Bendito and
Freddy Sanchez. The Jets got a win at No. 3 doubles as
Jeff Wherritt and
Evgeniy Kim defeated Jenson Kingsley and Wesley Goodrich of BC, 8-3.
The Jets were only one match away from the loss after the first three singles matches ended. Kim won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, over Voth-Gaeddert, however, Dos Santos and Sanchez both dropped their single matches for a 4-2 deficit. Dos Santos lost 6-1, 2-6, 10-2 at No. 1 singles to Palenske, and Sanchez fell 3-6, 7-6, 10-2 at No. 3 singles to Chlumsky.
NU took the final three matches to win the match 5-4. Pyle started the rally with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles against Kingsley. Bendito evened the match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles against Soosalu. Wherritt's dominating 6-0, 6-1 victory over Brooks Taylor at No. 6 singles gave NU the 5-4 win.
The Jets return home for a match against Emporia State on Saturday (Sept. 21) at 10:30 a.m. at Riverside.
