WICHITA – The Newman volleyball team starts its 2013 home schedule on Thursday (Sept. 19) with a conference match against Texas-Permian Basin at 7 p.m. at Fugate Gymnasium. The match is the first of three-straight home contests as the Lady Jets welcome Lubbock Christian to Fugate Gymnasium on Saturday (Sept. 21) at 12 p.m. and Barclay College on Tuesday (Sept. 24).
NU is currently 2-4 and 0-2 in the Heartland Conference. The Lady Jets went 0-2 last week as NU opened its conference slate with Dallas Baptist and Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Patriots won 3-0 against NU on Thursday, and the Lady Lions defeated the Lady Jets in a tight five-set match on Saturday. Senior
Jeana Farruggia led NU with 15 kills in the five-set match at UAFS. Sophomore
Alexus Litts had 27 assists and 12 digs for a double-double, and senior
Tori Alderson lead NU with 23 digs.
UTPB is 2-7 overall and 1-0 in the Heartland Conference. On Thursday, the Falcons defeated Texas A&M International, 3-1, in Odessa. In their most recent action, the Falcons swept University of the Southwest 3-0. UTPB's offense is led by Melissa Lusk and Keeley Brogdon. The duo is first and second in kills with 86 (2.26 per set) and 85 (2.24 per set), respectively. Ariel Fralick and Ariana Gallardo have 196 and 134 assists. Jordan McDonald leads UPTB with 162 digs. The match against NU is UTPB's first true road match of the season.
Lubbock Christian is 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Lady Chaps travel to Oklahoma Panhandle State on Thursday before their match with NU on Saturday. In conference play, LCU defeated TAMIU in straight sets, but also fell in straight sets to St. Mary's. The Lady Chaps will be on the road for the first time in five matches against OPSU. Kacey Deterding leads LCU and the conference with 3.69 kills per set, and Amy Edwards puts down 2.77 kills per set.
NU volleyball plays 13 home matches this season. After this weekend's conference home matches, NU takes on Barclay College on Tuesday, Sept. 24. After a two-match conference road trip, the Lady Jets play four straight home matches. On Oct. 3 and 5, Texas A&M International and St. Mary's come to Fugate for two Heartland Conference matches.
The next three home matches are all non-conference showdowns. NU takes on Southwestern College on Oct. 7, Northwestern Oklahoma State on Oct. 10 and Cameron on Oct. 15.
The final five home contests are all against Heartland Conference opponents. UAFS and DBU come to Wichita on Oct. 17 and Oct. 19. Two weeks later, McMurry and St. Edward's travel to NU on Oct. 31 and Nov. 2. Senior Day is Nov. 16 when the Lady Jets host OPSU.
