Women’s Soccer Can’t Hold Two-Goal Lead, Fall in Double OT

Box Score WICHITA – The Newman women's soccer team pulled ahead to an early 2-0 advantage, but couldn't hold on, falling to Fort Hays State, 3-2, on a double overtime golden goal on Sunday (Sept. 29) at Wilkins Field. The Lady Jets dropped to 2-4 with the tough loss.
 
NU went up 1-0 early on Mei-Mei Senthavy's team-leading fifth goal of the season. She scored from the left side of the box about 10 yards out in the 11th minute with the assist going to Maricela Ruvalcaba. The Lady Jets doubled the advantage to 2-0 in the 39th minute when Olivia Hull knocked in a rebound from a Blair Terry shot. Terry was credited with the assist on the goal.
 
The Lady Jets led 2-0 at halftime, despite being outshot, 8-3, in the first half. 

The Lady Tigers cut the NU lead in half after a foul in the box gave FHSU a penalty kick. The Lady Tigers knocked it in for a 2-1 score in the 62nd minute. FHSU sent the game into overtime with a goal in the 86th minute on a shot from the top of the box.
 
FHSU scored the game-winning goal in the 108th of the second overtime to get the 3-2 victory.
 
In the game, NU finished with six shots, while the visiting Lady Tigers totaled 24. FHSU had a 12-2 second half shots advantage and also finished with four shots in overtime. The Lady Jets had one overtime shot.
 
Haley Borchers went the full 107:04 in goal. She made six saves and allowed the three goals.
 
The Lady Jets make the short trip to Friends University on Tuesday (Oct. 1) for a 6 p.m. contest. The men's soccer team follows at 8:30 p.m.
