Volleyball Goes 2-2 in Opening Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KEARNEY, Neb. – Newman volleyball went 1-1 on the second day of the New Victorian Inn & Suites/Runza Volleyball Classic, hosted by Nebraska Kearney in Kearney, Neb. On day two (Sept. 7), the Lady Jets started with a 3-0 win over William Jewell and dropped the weekend finale in a close 3-2 match to Black Hills State. NU is 2-2 after the opening weekend.
 
Newman 3, William Jewell 0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-11)
 
In its first match of day two, NU blanked WJC 3-0. The Lady Jets fell behind 18-14 in the first set, but stormed back to tie the score at 20-20. With the score tied 22-22, NU won three of the last four points to go up 1-0.
 
The Lady Jets picked up another close set win in the second. NU had set point at 24-22, but WJC put down two straight points for a 24-24 tie. With it 25-25, the Lady Jets scored the final two points to win set two, 27-25.
 
NU got off to a fast start in set three, scoring the first nine points for a 9-0 lead. The Lady Jets were never challenged in the match-clinching set, winning 25-11.
 
Alexus Litts led the team in assists and digs with 23 and 21 respectively. Alexis Roecker totaled a team-high nine kills, and NU got great production from the right side, getting eight kills from Shelby Zoglman and seven kills from Laura Hageman.
 
Black Hills State 3, Newman 2 (27-29, 25-20, 21-25, 27-25, 15-11)
 
After going up 2-1 against Black Hills State, NU couldn't hold on, falling to BHSU, 3-2.
 
NU took set one, 29-27. With BHSU up 26-25, middle hitter Ashley Gonzalez went off, scoring NU's last four points on kills to win the set.
 
In set two, NU got off to a quick start, scoring the first three points for a 3-0 advantage. BHSU knotted the score at 9-9 and never trailed again in the set, pulling away for a 25-20 win to tie the match.
 
The Lady Jets once again started fast in the third set, going up 4-0. NU only trailed three times in the set and never by more than one point, and the Lady Jets pulled out to a 25-21 win, taking a 2-1 advantage.
 
In the fourth set, NU started on a 9-2 run, however, BHSU battled to tie the set at 16-16. The Lady Jets went up 24-23 and forced match point, but BHSU scored the next two points for a 25-24 score. With the fourth set tied at 25-25, BHSU picked up two straight points to force a fifth set.
 
The fifth set was very close to start with neither team leading by more than a point early on. With the Lady Jets up 11-10, BHSU ended the match with a 5-0 run to win 15-11 and take the match 3-2.
 
Ashley Gonzalez put down a team-high 19 kills, and hit .325. Alexis Roecker added 13 kills and hit .324. Lexi Kuharich's 34 assists led the Lady Jets, and Litts added 27 assists. Tori Alderson paced the defense with 26 assists.
 
The Lady Jets start their Heartland Conference slate on Thursday (Sept. 12) at Dallas Baptist. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Dallas.
