Box Score WICHITA – The Newman men's basketball team won 97-83 over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday (Jan. 4) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets improved to 4-8 and 1-3 in the Heartland Conference. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for NU.
Four Jets were in double figures with
Ryan McCarthy scoring a career-high 21 points.
Jeremy Espinoza added a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Marquis Cuyler and
Elhad Emerllahu scored 19 and 18 points, respectively. McCarthy and Espinoza each added six assists.
NU shot 56.7 percent (36-64) from the field, a season high, including 69 percent (20-29) in the second half. The 97 points ties a season high scored against Manhattan Christian on Nov. 16.
The Jets dominated on the boards with 46 rebounds to 31 from the Aggies. Espinoza's 12 rebounds matched a Jet season high, and Cuyler pulled down seven rebounds.
Jeremy Newton scored a game-high 23 points for OPSU. Bill Lee, Jr. added 17 points and eight rebounds. The Aggies went 27-of-66 from the field (40.9 percent), and 10-of-22 (45.5 percent) from 3-point range.
The Jets are back in action on Thursday (Jan. 9) against Rogers State at Fugate Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
