Jets Open Season Tonight Against Bethel College

WICHITA – The Newman women's basketball season starts tonight (Nov. 14) as the Jets host Bethel College at 7 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. Live video and stats will be available.

The game is a Red Out, sponsored by HALO. There will be a pre-game pinata at 6:30 outside the atrium, and fans can enter for a chance to compete in a game of knock out. Prizes include gift cards to Monterrey Mexican Grill and QT. Help others stay warm by donating winter apparel for the upcoming cold season such as coats, gloves, hats and scarves. 
 
NU went 16-11 a season ago, finishing in a tie for second place in the Heartland Conference with a 13-7 record. The team advanced to the Heartland Conference Tournament for the fourth straight season – the second straight time under head coach Darin Spence. The Jets return two starters from the 2013-14 season – Cierra Tjaden and Brianna Caldwell. Seven players return, and NU added seven newcomers.
 
In two exhibition contests, newcomer Sierra Maykus has led the Jets in scoring both times. She scored 10 points in an exhibition loss at Wichita State on Nov. 2 and added 12 points in an exhibition loss at Kansas State on Nov. 10.
 
Spence starts his third season as the head coach of the Jets. He has a NU career record of 27-17. In his career, Spence is 471-249.
 
Bethel College has already started their 2014-15 campaign. The Threshers are 1-2 on the season with a win over York College. Their two losses are to Columbia College and William Woods at the Columbia Classic last weekend. In the 2013-14 season, Bethel went 12-17. Lauren Ulrich has led the Threshers in scoring in two of the three games.

After tonight's game, the Jets season continues next weekend with two contests at the Missouri S&T Classic. NU plays Friday (Nov. 21) against Central Missouri at 5:30 p.m., and on Saturday (Nov. 22) the Jets take on Lemoyne-Owen College at 2 p.m. Both games will be played at the Gale Bullman Multi-purpose Building in Rolla, Mo.
