Jets Start Slow in 81-32 Exhibition Loss at Wichita State

WICHITA – The Newman women's basketball team lost, 81-32, to NCAA Division I Wichita State in an exhibition for both teams at Charles Koch Arena. The Jets continue the exhibition season with Kansas State next Monday (Nov. 10) at Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan.
 
WSU, which won the Missouri Valley Conference in 2013-14, started the game on a 24-2 run in the first 7 minutes. The margin grew to 33-7 at the under 8 minute timeout in the first half. The Shockers led at halftime, 53-16.
 
A better defensive effort in the second half held the Shockers to 28 points. NU once again scored 16 points for the 81-32 score. WSU shot 36.7 (11-30) in the second half.
 
The Shockers full court press forced the Jets into 36 turnovers. Kelsey Jacobs and Alex Harden each had six steals.
 
Sierra Maykus led NU with 10 points and hit 7-of-8 free throws. DeJah Thompson pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
 
The Jets shot only 24.2 (8-33) percent from the field and 21.4 (3-14) percent from 3-point range. NU struggled from the free throw line, going 13-of-27 (48.1 percent).
 
WSU's Jamillah Bonner and Harden scored 24 and 21 points, respectively. Harden was one rebound from a double-double with nine boards.
 
The Shockers shot 45.7 (32-70) percent from the field, including 52.5 (21-40) percent in the first half. WSU shot only 18.8 (3-16) from 3. The Shockers went 14-of-25 from the free throw line for 56 percent.
