Late Run Pushes No. 20 UCM to 60-47 Win over Newman

ROLLA, Mo. – A late run from No. 20 Central Missouri downed the Newman women's basketball team, 60-47, on Friday (Nov. 21) at the Lady Miner Classic. The Jets dropped to 1-1 on the season and are back in action tomorrow against LeMoyne-Owen at 2 p.m.
 
With the Jets trailing by only one at 39-38 after a Naomi Rosales free throw with 10:28 remaining, UCM scored eight straight points to pull out to a 47-38 advantage with 7:46 left.
 
A basket from Cierra Tjaden and a triple from Sierra Maykus cut the deficit to four points at 47-43 at the 5:57 mark; however, NU couldn't close the margin to less than four points. After UCM free throws, Tjaden made a jumper to slice the deficit back to four at 49-45. The Jennies ended the game with an 11-2 run for the 60-47 final score.  
 
In a close first half, neither team led by more than four points. The Jennies were in front 16-13 with 11:34 left in the half, and the Jets went on a 7-0 run to gain their largest lead of the game at 20-16 with 8:05 remaining in the first stanza. Rosales knocked down back-to-back jumpers to give NU the lead at 17-16, and Maykus hit her first of three 3-pointers for the 20-16 score. After the first half, UCM held a 28-25 edge.
 
Sophomore Cierra Tjaden scored a team-high 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting (50 percent). She was 1-for-1 from 3-point range. Sierra Maykus added nine points on three 3-pointers. Kesha Buckner pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
 
For the game, NU shot 39.6 percent (19-48) from the field and went 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) from 3. The Jets shot only eight free throws, hitting four to go 50 percent from the line.
 
The Jet defense held UCM to 29.7 percent (19-64) from the field, including 23.7 percent (9-38) in the first half. The Jennies, however, shot 23 free throws and made 19 for 82.6 percent. UCM finished with a 15-point advantage from the free throw line. The Jennies totaled 20 offensive rebounds and tallied 40 rebounds for a 40-35 rebounding advantage. NU turned the ball over 20 times to only seven from UCM.
 
Justina Prairie Chief tallied a game-high 20 points, and Jasmine Thompson scored 12 points. Also in double figures was Revonnia Howard with 10 points. Prairie Chief, Thompson and Howard all grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Prairie Chief also totaled five steals.  
 
NU returns to action tomorrow (Nov. 22) against LeMoyne-Owen at 2 p.m. Video and live stats will be available.
