Jets Hold Early Lead on No. 11 Shockers, WSU Pulls to 105-57 Win

WICHITA – The Newman men's basketball team held a one-point lead twice early and played with the No. 11-ranked team in NCAA Division I for the first 12 minutes before Wichita State pulled out to a 105-57 win over the Jets on Sunday (Nov. 23) at Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers moved to 3-0 on the season, and NU remains at 2-0 as the contest was an exhibition game for the Jets.
 
After a Ron Baker 3-pointer 12 seconds into the game, the Jets went on a 4-0 run to gain an early 4-3 lead less than 1 minute into the contest. Reggie Baker hit a 3-pointer for the 4-3 score at the 19:06 mark. Another 3 from Ron Baker of WSU put the Shockers in front, 6-4, but Cortrael Colbert nailed a 3 of his own, and the Jets regained the lead at 7-6 with 18:49 left in the half. It was the only two leads NU held during the game.
 
The Shockers went on an 8-0 run to pull out to a seven point advantage at 14-7 after an Evan Wessel 3 ball. NU's Reggie Baker cut the deficit to four with another triple, his second of the game, for a 14-10 score with 17:15 left in the half.
 
WSU's lead grew to 11 at the 13:26 mark after another Ron Baker 3; however, NU sliced the advantage to only six points after a Jeremy Espinoza 3 and a Colbert fastbreak layup for a 24-18 score at the 10:19 mark. The Shockers were up only eight points with 8:35 left in the half after a Ryan McCarthy jumper.
 
In the final 8:22 of the first half, the Shockers outscored the Jets 35-9 to take a 67-33 lead into halftime.
 
The Jets shot 40.7 percent (11-27) in the first half, including 45.5 percent (5-11) from 3. Reggie Baker totaled 11 points in the first half on 4-of-8 shooting, and he went 3-for-5 from 3-point distance. Colbert added nine points.
 
Ron Baker scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the first half. He knocked down four 3s and finished 5-of-7 from the field. Darius Carter totaled 13 of his 15 points in the first half.
 
In the second stanza, the Shockers outscored the Jets, 38-24, to get the 105-57 victory.
 
For the game, Reggie Baker totaled a team-high 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting, and he went 4-of-7 from 3. Colbert tallied 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting. He added a team-high four rebounds and three assists. In only 16 minutes due to foul trouble, Espinoza scored eight points. In total 12 Jets played.
 
Ron Baker totaled a game-high 18 points. Carter added 15 points, and Fred VanVleet tallied 12 points and a game-high four assists.
 
The Jets shot 32.1 percent (17-53) from the field and 33.3 percent (8-24) from 3-point range.
 
The Shockers shot 52.2 percent (35-67) and 43.5 percent (10-23) from 3. WSU held a 57-27 advantage in rebounds, including 20 offensive rebounds. A total of 15 Shockers saw action.
 
The Jets return to regular season action on Tuesday (Nov. 25), hosting Fort Hays State at 7:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. Video, live stats and radio coverage at KGSO 1410 AM are available for the game.
