WICHITA – The Newman men's basketball team ends its non-conference schedule this Saturday (Dec. 13) against William Jewell College at 3 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. Video, live stats and audio from KGSO 1410 AM will be available for the contest. The game is the second of a basketball doubleheader with the women's team playing WJC at 1 p.m.
The Jets are currently 3-2 in their non-conference slate. In their most recent game, NU rolled to a 101-59 victory over Manhattan Christian on Dec. 6 in Wichita. The Jets hit the century mark in points for the first time since 2008 in Fugate Gymnasium. Senior
Ryan McCarthy tied his career high in points with 21. He went 8-of-10 from the field. Five Jets tallied double digit scoring outputs: McCarthy,
James Pegues,
Sean Michaelson,
Cortrael Colbert and
Reggie Baker. Ten Jets scored in the game with 11 players seeing action.
For the season, Baker, a junior from Avon Park, Fla., leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 22 points and six rebounds per game.
Jeremy Espinoza (11.2), Pegues (10.4), Colbert (10.2) and McCarthy (10.0) all average double figures. Colbert averages a team-best 6.4 assists per game, also leading the Heartland Conference. Espinoza, a senior forward, and his 2.2 steals per game is the best in the conference.
The Cardinals are currently 3-3 on the season. In their most recent contest, WJC won, 81-41, over Central Christian College of the Bible on Dec. 8 in Liberty, Mo. Four Cardinals scored in double figures, led by Payton Meek with 14 points off the bench. D'Vante Mosby has a team-high scoring average of 17.3 points per game. He is one of six Cardinals averaging double figures. Mosby also leads the team in rebounding at 6.5 per game. Clint McCullough is top in assists at 2.3 per game.
After Saturday's game, NU starts Heartland Conference play on Dec. 18 against St. Edward's at 7:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. Live stats, audio, and video will be available for the contest.
