Jets Hit Century Mark in 101-59 Win

WICHITA – The Newman men's basketball team hit the century mark for the first time at Fugate Gymnasium since 2008 in a 101-59 win over Manhattan Christian College on Saturday (Dec. 6). The Jets moved to 3-2 on the season. Ryan McCarthy tied his career high with 21 points.
 
Reggie Baker scored the game's first five points in the first 1:09. He started with a jumper at the 19:27 mark and then hit a 3 with 18:51 left in the half for a 5-0 NU edge. The Jets used a 14-2 run to take control of the game in the first 6 minutes. NU led by double digits for the rest of the game after the opening 14-2 run. The score was 52-27 at halftime.
 
In the second half, NU continued to control the game, holding an advantage of 20 or more points during the whole half. The largest lead of the game came by the final 101-59 score at 42 points. Trey Unrau put NU over the century mark with a 3 with 35 seconds remaining for the 101-59 advantage.
 
The 101 points are the most at Fugate Gymnasium since the Jets scored 119 points against York College on Dec. 13, 2008 in a 119-68 win. NU last scored 100 points in a 100-96 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Feb. 15, 2014.
 
McCarthy scored a team-high and career-high 21 points in only 17 minutes. He finished 8-of-10 from the field, including 5-for-7 from 3. He was one of five Jets in double figures. James Pegues scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, and Sean Michaelson totaled a career-high of 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from 3. Cortrael Colbert and Baker each totaled 11 points.
 
The Jets hit 20 3-pointers on 52.6 percent (20-38) shooting from behind the arc. McCarthy hit five 3s, Michaelson had four and Pegues and Unrau each hit three 3s. For the game, NU shot 48.7 percent (37-76) from the field, including 51.4 percent (18-35) in the second half.
 
NU held a 46-34 edge in rebounding. Easton Julian and Jeremy Espinoza each pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. The Jets had 26 assists on 37 made baskets with Colbert dishing out six of them.
 
MCC's Mike White tallied a game-high 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting. He added six rebounds. The Thunder finished at 39.7 percent (27-68) from the field and only 3-of-15 (20 percent) from 3. MCC only took four free throws in a game that totaled 18 fouls.
 
The Jets end their non-conference schedule next Saturday (Dec. 13), hosting William Jewell at 3 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. Live stats, video and audio will be available for the contest.
