Box Score WICHITA – The Newman men's basketball season ended with an 86-83 loss to Oklahoma Christian on Thursday (Feb. 27) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets end the season with a 9-17 record and 6-12 in the Heartland Conference.
The Jets trailed by nine, 80-71, but stormed back to pull to within one at 84-83. Kendre Talley made two free throws for OC with 4 seconds left to put the Eagles up 86-83, and NU couldn't get up a last second 3-pointer in the final 4 seconds.
After two free throws by
Jeremy Espinoza cut the score to 80-72 with 1:31 remaining, NU forced a turnover and
Trae Beck hit a 3-pointer with 49 seconds left for an 80-76 score. OC was fouled with 45 seconds remaining, and Jordan VanDeKop split the pair of free throws. Espinoza made a layup at the 26 second mark for an 81-78 score.
With 24 seconds left, OC once again split its free throws, and
Elhad Emerllahu scored a basket with 15 seconds remaining to pull NU to within two at 82-80. Talley went to the line with 14 seconds on the clock and hit both free throws for an 84-80 score.
Senior
Marquis Cuyler cut the deficit to one with a 3-pointer with 8 seconds remaining for a 84-83 score. Talley then hit two more free throws for an 86-83 OC lead.
After calling timeout with 4 seconds remaining, Beck couldn't get a shot off in the right corner as the clock expired.
Cuyler scored a game-high 25 points. He went 10-of-11 from the free throw line. He added seven rebounds. Fellow senior Emerllahu totaled 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field. Beck hit four 3-pointers in his final game for 12 points. He also had four assists. Espinoza totaled a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, his fourth of the season. He had three steals and one block.
