WICHITA – The Newman volleyball team got back on track with a 3-1 victory over Bethel College on Monday (Sept. 15) inside Fugate Gymnasium.
Ashley Gonzalez totaled 23 kills with a .541 winning percentage, both match highs for the season. The Lady Jets improved to 4-5 with the win.
After dropping the first set, 25-20, NU pulled away for big wins in sets two and three. The Lady Jets won set two, 25-14, and set three, 25-11. NU won the match with a 25-22 win in set four.
The Lady Jets struggled in the first set, committing eight errors and had only 10 kills for a .050 hitting percentage. Bethel College hit .250 with 13 kills and only four errors.
NU dominated the second set with a .444 hitting percentage and only two errors. The Threshers managed only nine kills and hit .148.
The Lady Jets were just as good in the third set, overwhelming Bethel with a .438 hitting percentage and 17 kills. The Threshers totaled only five kills for a .080 hitting percentage.
For the match, NU hit .243, its second-best total for the season.
Alexis Roecker also hit double digits in kills for NU, finishing with 13 on 23 attempts for a .435 hitting percentage.
Jarin Braithwait tallied nine kills.
Lexi Kuharich totaled a NU season-high 47 assists and added seven digs.
Taylor Alderson finished with a match-high 17 digs, and
Anna Burton added 15 digs.
The Lady Jets return to Heartland Conference action on Thursday (Sept. 15) when St. Edward's comes to Fugate Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. match.
