LAREDO, Texas – The Newman volleyball team picked up its first road win of the season, defeating Texas A&M International, 3-1, on Thursday (Sept. 25). The Lady Jets moved to 5-6 and 2-4 in the Heartland Conference.
After dropping a close 25-23 first set, NU won the next three sets for the win. In the second set, the Lady Jets hit .383 to pull away for a 25-17 win.
The third set was much closer with the Lady Jets getting a 25-23 win. NU started fast, gaining an 8-4 edge. The Dustdevils rallied to tie the score at 8-8. With the score still knotted at 16-16, kills from
Gaylynn Jones and
Emily Harvey put NU in front 18-16. Three straight TAMIU points put them up 19-18. With the Dustdevils up 21-20, the Lady Jets went in front 23-21 because of three TAMIU miscues. A Jones kill put the set away for a 25-23 NU win.
After two points put NU up 2-0 in set four, TAMIU scored five straight for a 5-2 advantage. The Lady Jets knotted the score at 6-6. After a Dustdevil point made it 7-6, the Lady Jets scored seven straight points for a 13-7 edge. A 7-1 TAMIU run tied the score at 14-14. NU responded with an 8-1 run to put them in front, 22-15.
Alexus Litts closed out the set and match with a kill for a 25-19 win.
Jones finished with a double-double of 18 kills and 17 digs. Her 18 kills were a season high and one kill off her career high of 19. She added five assists and two blocks. Jones hit .425.
Jarin Braithwait tallied 10 kills and hit .455, a match high. Also in double figures for kills was
Ashley Gonzalez with 11. Litts led NU with 22 assists, and
Taylor Alderson finished with a match-high and career-high 31 digs.
As a team, NU hit .244, its second-best hitting percentage of the season. The Lady Jets totaled 65 kills to 18 errors. TAMIU hit .184 for the match.
The Lady Jets travel to St. Mary's on Saturday (Sept. 27) for a 12 p.m. match in Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas.
