Volleyball Wins, 3-1, over DBU to Start 2014

Box Score WICHITA – The Newman volleyball team defeated last season's Heartland Conference Tournament champion Dallas Baptist, 3-1, on Thursday (Sept. 4) in Fugate Gymnasium to open the 2014 season. NU took down the Patriots for the first time since a 3-2 win in Dallas on Oct. 16, 2010. The Lady Jets moved to 1-0 in the Heartland Conference and overall.
 
NU started the match by winning the first two sets. After falling behind 10-7, The Lady Jets went on a 6-1 run to go up 13-11 and force DBU to take a timeout. The set remained tight with DBU holding a 22-20 late in the set. The Lady Jets went on a 5-0 run to win the first set 25-22. Freshman Kayla Turner had back-to-back kills to end the set. Turner totaled seven kills in the first set.
 
The Lady Jets started strong in the second set with a 10-0 run to go up 15-3. Three straight kills from Alexis Roecker started the run, and Shelby Zoglman and Ashley Gonzalez kept the streak going with kills. Two straight service aces by Turner upped the advantage to 12-3. Roecker and Gonzalez added one more kill each and one error by the Patriots made it 15-3.
 
DBU tried to get back into the set with a 5-0 run for a 15-8 score. After a NU timeout, the Lady Jets tallied the next two points. The teams traded points, and NU held an eight-point lead at 22-14, but DBU made another 5-0 run for a 22-19 score. The Lady Jets took their final timeout of the set and went up 23-21. Gonzalez closed out the set with back-to-back kills for a 25-21 set two win.
 
The third set started close with DBU up 12-11 before the Patriots pulled away with an 8-0 run. DBU held on for a 25-15 win in the third set.
 
NU put away the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set. With the set tied at 8-8 after three quick NU points, DBU scored five of the next seven points to go up 13-10. The Lady Jets then went on a 7-1 run to go in front 17-14. Three kills from Gaylynn Jones fueled the run. With the set close at 20-18 in favor of the Lady Jets, three straight NU kills put them two points from winning the match at 23-18. The Patriots closed the gap to 23-21, but NU got a kill from Roecker and a block assist from Jones and Gonzalez to win the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-1.
 
Turner and Gonzalez led the Lady Jets with 15 kills, a match high. Turner totaled a triple-double with 15 kills, 22 assists and 15 digs. She added two service aces and two block assists. Gonzalez hit .433. Jones tallied a double-double of 11 kills and 15 digs. Lexi Kuharich notched 23 assists to lead the Lady Jets, and Anna Burton had a match-high 24 digs.
 
Tiara Iwegbu finished with 15 kills to lead DBU, and Kaycie Bird totaled a match-high 46 assists.
 
NU won its season opener for the second straight season as the Lady Jets won 3-2 over South Dakota Mines in their 2013 season opener. NU won its Heartland Conference opener for the first time since Sept. 16, 2010 when the Lady Jets defeated St. Mary's 3-1. It also the first win over DBU since Oct. 16, 2010.
 
The Lady Jets are back in action tomorrow (Sept. 5) at the New Victorian Inn & Suites/Runza Volleyball Classic in Kearney, Neb. NU takes on Northern State at 2:30 p.m. and host Nebraska-Kearney at 7 p.m. Live stats will be provided and live video is available for the match against UNK.
