Box Score 2 KEARNEY, Neb. – The Newman volleyball team went 0-2 on day one of the New Victorian Inn & Suites/Runza Fall Classic, hosted by Nebraska Kearney. The Lady Jets lost to No. 21 Northern State and host No. 9 Nebraska Kearney. NU dropped to 1-2 on the season.
NSU 3, NU 0
The Lady Jets started the tournament with a 3-0 loss against No. 21 NSU. In the first set, the Wolves scored the first four points and didn't look back, winning set one 25-13.
NSU continued its strong play into the start of the second set, building an 11-6 lead with a 3-0 run. With the Lady Jets down 14-9, NU went on a run to tie the score at 15-15. The Wolves took control of the set with a 9-1 run and won the second set, 25-18.
For the third straight set, NSU started fast with a 10-1 spurt. The Lady Jets couldn't recover and fell 25-11 in the third set and lost 3-0 in the match.
Cari McGarvie of NSU totaled a match-high 13 kills and hit .500. The Wolves hit .340 as a team in the match.
Kayla Turner led NU with seven kills and 10 assists. She added six digs.
UNK 3, NU 0
In the second match of the day, NU fell to No. 9 UNK, 3-0. The first set started close with neither team gaining momentum. The Lady Jets held a 12-11 advantage then the Lopers scored five straight points to go up 16-12. With NU closing in at 17-15, UNK pushed out to a 23-16 lead with a quick 6-1 run. The Lopers had set point at 24-18, and the Lady Jets kept it interesting with a 4-0 spurt.
Sarah Peterson tallied two kills in the run for a 24-22 score. The Lopers put away set one with a kill and a 25-22 score.
The Lopers started out fast in the second set, pulling to an 8-2 advantage. With the Lady Jets hanging around only down 18-13, UNK ended the set with a 7-1 run to take set two, 25-14.
NU took an early lead in the first set, 3-2, with a block from
Laura Hageman and
Ashley Gonzalez. Gonzalez started the set with a kill as well. The Lopers then went on an 8-1 run to go in front 11-4. UNK continued to pull away and took an 18-9 lead on an error from the Lady Jets. The Lopers held the lead for a 25-17 win in the third set.
Bailey Sokolowski totaled a match-high 11 kills. Liz McGowan added 10 kills for UNK.
Gonzalez led NU with seven kills. Turner had 17 assists, and
Lexi Kuharich tallied a double-double with 12 assists and 10 digs.
NU starts day two of the tournament with Western State at 10 a.m. The Lady Jets then play South Dakota School of Mines at 4:45 p.m.
