Volleyball Wins Two on Last Day of UNK Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KEARNEY, Neb. – The Newman volleyball team got back on track with two wins on the second day of the New Victorian Inn & Suites/Runza Fall Classic on Saturday (Sept. 6), hosted by Nebraska Kearney. The Lady Jets moved to 3-2 on the season and went 2-2 in Kearney.
 
Newman 3, Western State 1
 
NU started the day with a 3-1 victory over Western State. The first set was close until late. With the Lday Jets up 20-18, they scored the final five to win set one, 25-18. Gaylynn Jones put down the set-winning kill.
 
The second set saw NU pull out to a 10-6 advantage. The Lady Jets were up 20-15 after a Jones kill. Western State battled back to within one at 23-22. After a NU timeout, Sarah Peterson gave the Lady Jets set point with a kill for a 24-22 lead. Western State then scored three straight points for a 25-24 score. It was tied 26-26 then Western State took advantage of two NU errors to win the set 28-26.
 
After a close 14-13 start to the third set, NU went on a 11-3 run to end the set and go up in the match 2-1. With a 9-9 score in the fourth set, the Lady Jets reeled off seven points to go up 16-9. NU controlled the rest of the set to win, 25-21, and to take the match, 3-1.
 
Ashley Gonzalez put down a match-high 13 kills, hitting .524. Jones totaled a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Sarah Peterson added 11 kills. Kayla Turner had a team-high 26 assists and 13 digs for a double-double. Anna Burton finished with 17 digs.
 
Newman 3, South Dakota Mines 2
 
The Lady Jets won the first set, 25-22. NU started strong, going up 9-2. The Hardrockers went on a run to take a 13-11 lead. The Mines lead grew to 18-14. The Lady Jets came back to tie the set at 21-21. After a point from the Hardrockers, NU tallied four straight points to win the set 25-22. Turner put down the kill to take the set.
 
In a close second set the score was tied at 19-19. Three points from Mines put them up 22-19, however, the Lady Jets went on a 3-0 run of their own for a 22-22 tie. The Hardrockers scored three of the final four points to win the set 25-23. Mines went up in the match 2-1 with a 27-25 set three win. The Lady Jets had set point with a 25-24 lead, but the Hardrockers got three kills to win the set, 27-25.
 
With the Lady Jets trailing, they went on to win the final two sets to win the match, 3-2. In the fourth set, NU pulled out to a 10-2 advantage. Mines closed to within one at 15-14. The Lady Jets went on a run to go back up 20-15. Four points from the Hardrockers got them to one at 20-19. With the score tied at 21-21, NU scored four of the next five points to win the set, 25-22. Emily Harvey and Shelby Zoglman both had kills, and Mines totaled two errors.
 
In the final set, the Lady Jets were victorious with by the score of 15-10. The set was tied at 9-9 then NU scored four points for a 13-9 advantage. After a Mines point, the Lady Jets closed out the set, and match, with two points – both coming from Hardrocker errors.
 
Gonzalez against had a match-high 18 kills. Jones had 15 kills and 15 digs for another double-double. Turner totaled 40 assists and 20 digs.
 
NU returns home for another Heartland Conference match. The Lady Jets take on Arkansas-Fort Smith on Tuesday (Sept. 9) at 7 p.m. at Fugate Gymnasium.
