Men’s Basketball Looks to Get Back on Track Tonight

WICHITA – The Newman men's basketball team looks to end its two game skid tonight (Jan. 29) against Texas A&M International at 7:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. Live stats, video and audio will be available for the contest.
 
The Jets are currently 8-8 and 4-6 in the Heartland Conference after a 0-2 road trip. NU suffered a heartbreaking one-point loss at UA Fort Smith on Jan. 22 and then fell, 86-71, at Rogers State on Jan. 24. Before the two losses, the Jets defeated Dallas Baptist on Jan. 19 at Fugate Gymnasium by the score of 88-75. Despite the recent struggles, the Jets are currently on a two-game winning streak at Fugate Gymnasium. Reggie Baker continues to lead the team in scoring at 20.9 points per game. He also averages a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game. A total of five Jets average double figures in scoring. Senior Jeremy Espinoza pours in 12.9 points per game; Cortrael Colbert totals 12 points per game and James Pegues tallies 11.1 points per game. Senior Ryan McCarthy adds 10.8 points per game. Colbert leads the team with 5.4 assists per game.
 
The Dustdevils are 9-9 and 4-6 in the Heartland Conference. TAMIU ended a five-game losing streak on Monday (Jan. 26) with a 74-56 win in Laredo, Texas over Dallas Baptist. Before the win, the Dustdevils lost to UAFS, Rogers State, St. Edward's, Texas-Permian Basin and St. Mary's. TAMIU has struggled on the road this season with only a 1-6 mark. Their only win is at Oklahoma Panhandle State on Dec. 20. The Dustdevils leading scorer is Vadal Faniel at 14.4 points per game. Adding 12.6 points per game is Patrick Carlson. Faniel is the team's leading rebounder at 7.8 per game.
 
The two teams met once this season on Jan. 1 in Laredo, Texas. TAMIU won by the score of 70-61. Colbert scored a game-high 19 points, but the Jets struggled from the field, hitting only 28 percent of their shots. The Dustdevils shot 53.5 percent.
 
After tonight's game, the Jets host St. Mary's on Saturday (Jan. 29) in the Hall of Fame Game at 3 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
