Potter Goes for 300th Win at Hall of Fame Game on Saturday

WICHITA – Mark Potter and his Newman men's basketball team will go for his 300th all-time win on Saturday (Jan. 31) against St. Mary's at 3 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. Potter, who is in his 17th season, has a career record of 299-188 at NU.
 
Saturday's game is also the Newman Hall of Fame Game. The 2015 Newman Athletics Hall of Fame Class will be announced during halftime of the game. The class includes Kelly Gaul, Dave Skinner, Cory Simmons, Bianca Montagnino-Simmons, Bill Powers and Dondlinger Construction. Admission to the game is free for all fans.
 
The Jets are currently 9-8 this season and 5-6 in the Heartland Conference. NU ranks seventh in the Heartland Conference and are two games back from a spot in the conference tournament. The Jets are on a three-game home winning streak after a 91-79 victory over Texas A&M International on Thursday (Jan. 29) at Fugate Gymnasium. James Pegues and Reggie Baker scored 23 points, as the Jets pulled away late.
 
Baker currently leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 21.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Four other Jets average double figures in scoring. Senior Jeremy Espinoza scores 13.2 points per game, and junior guard Cortrael Colbert totals 12.2 points per game. After his career-high night of 23 points, Pegues averages 11.8 points per game, and senior Ryan McCarthy adds 10.5 points per game.
 
The Rattlers are 11-7 and are currently on a four-game winning streak. The streak includes three home wins, and most recently the Rattlers won, 68-62, at Oklahoma Christian on Thursday (Jan. 29). Their offense is led by Marvin Whitt and his 13.3 points per game average. Marvin Binney adds 10.7 points per game.
 
In the two teams' previous matchup this season, the Rattlers won 78-65 in San Antonio, Texas. Espinoza went 4-for-4 from 3 and scored a game-high 24 points in the loss. Baker tallied 14 points, and McCarthy finished with 11 points.
 
Potter has the most all-time wins in Newman men's basketball history. His current 299 wins are more than half of NU's all-time victories of 573. The all-time men's basketball record is 573-438 (.566). Potter's hitting percentage of .614 is currently second all-time behind Herm Bachrodt's record of .615 (24-15) in two seasons (1967-69), the first two seasons of Newman men's basketball.
