Jets Look to Get Back on Track with Three Home Contests

WICHITA – The Newman volleyball team looks to get back on track with three home matches this week. Tonight (Oct. 22) the Jets play Texas-Permian Basin at 7 p.m. NU takes on Lubbock Christian and Tarleton State on Saturday (Oct. 24). They play LCU at 11 a.m. and then play TSU at 4 p.m. Between the two matches NU matches, LCU and TSU play at 1:30 p.m. at Fugate Gymnasium.
 
The Jets are 17-6 on the season and 7-2 in the Heartland Conference. In their most recent contest, NU fell to Heartland Conference leading UA Fort Smith on Oct. 15. The Jets have lost two straight matches for the first time since the opening day of the season on Sept. 4 at the Angelo State Invitational.
 
It's the second time the Jets have played all three teams this season. On Sept. 17 in Odessa, Texas, NU won, 3-0, against UTPB. Two days later, the Jets defeated Lubbock Christian by a 3-2 score in Lubbock, Texas. NU fell to Tarleton State, 3-1, on Sept. 4 at the Angelo State Invitational in San Angelo, Texas.
 
The Falcons are currently 4-13 and 2-8 in the Heartland Conference. They are 1-5 on the road this season with their lone road victory on Tuesday (Oct. 20) at University of the Southwest by a 3-2 score. The win snapped a four-match losing streak for UTPB. Caitlyn Guajardo leads the team in kills with 2.11 per set and 120 on the season. Ariana Gallardo averages a team-best 5.84 assists per set. Jordan McDonald and Marina Salazar both average more than three digs per set at 3.37 and 3.18, respectively.
 
The Lady Chaps are currently 12-7 and 7-3 in the Heartland Conference. They take on UA Fort Smith on Thursday (Oct. 22) before coming to Wichita. LCU has won seven of their last eight matches on the season with their lone loss during the stretch at Dallas Baptist. For the season, LCU is 4-2 on the road. The Lady Chaps are lead on offense by Maddie Johnson with 3.04 kills per set. Mallory Powell has a team-best 10.81 assists per set average. Kelsie French leads the defense with an average of 6.01 digs per set.
 
The Texanns currently lead the Lone Star Conference with a 9-1 record and are 19-3 overall. They are currently on an 11-match winning streak. Two of the three losses on the season are on the road as TSU has a 4-2 record in away matches. Hailey Roberts has 481 kills and 6.17 kills per set on the season. Setting her up has been Chandler Gow with 910 assists and 11.97 assists per set. Ayssa Garcia averages a team-best 4.13 digs per set.
 
After the three matches this weekend, NU goes to the road for two Heartland Conference contests. The Jets take on St. Edward's on Oct. 29 in Austin, Texas and then play at Dallas Baptist on Oct. 31 in Dallas.
