Luca Anelli scored two second-half goals to lift the Newman men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Texas A&M International on Sunday (Oct. 25) at Dustdevil Field. NU moved to 9-6-1 on the season and 4-2 in the Heartland Conference. The Jets are now second in the league standings with 12 points.
Anelli tallied the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute as he knocked in a penalty kick for the 2-1 advantage. The junior from Southport, England scored his first goal 5 minutes earlier to tie the score at 1-1. In the 67th minute, Anelli received a long pass from
Kerbson Lubin and hit from 18 yards out after going by a TAMIU defender. Lubin got the assist on the Anelli goal.
The two goals give Anelli seven on the season, a team high. His 18 points are also a team high as he adds four assists.
The Dustdevils gained a 1-0 lead in the final minute before halftime. TAMIU's Maxine Baron scored from 4 yards after a corner kick. Aaron Zuniga picked up the assist.
For the game, NU held a 16-8 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. The Jets dominated the second half, totaling 12 shots to only one shot from the Dustdevils. In the first half, TAMIU finished with a 7-4 shot advantage.
Calum Dillon started in goal, making two saves and allowing the one goal. He moved to 9-6-1 in goal.
The Jets continue their four-game road stretch to end the regular season on Thursday (Oct. 29) at Rogers State in Claremore, Okla. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
