PORTALES, N.M. – The Newman volleyball team set a Newman NCAA Division II school records with its 16th win this season. The Jets won, 3-0, at Eastern New Mexico to run its winning streak to 14-straight matches. NU moved to 16-4 on the season.
The Jets got set wins by the scores of 27-25, 25-19 and 25-21.
In the first set, NU had set point at 24-21; however, ENMU scored three quick points to knot the score at 24-24. After a NU timeout, ENMU got set point at 25-24 after a block. The Jets responded with three straight points to take the set, 27-25.
Ashley Gonzalez started with a kill. After an error by ENMU,
Kayla Turner put the set away with a service ace.
For the first set, NU hit .345 with 16 kills and six errors on 29 attempts. ENMU finished at .207 with 13 kills.
The second set was all NU as they won 25-19. NU totaled a .167 hitting percentage with 13 kills and five errors on 48 attempts. ENMU tallied 11 kills and seven errors on 46 attempts to hit .087.
The Jets again made quick work of ENMU in the third set with a 25-21 win. NU hit better than .200 at .208 with 14 kills and four errors on 48 attempts. ENMU totaled 13 kills and seven errors for a .130 hitting percentage.
Senior middle hitter
Ashley Gonzalez totaled 22 kills, a season high for three sets. She hit a match-high .386. The senior added five blocks and two digs. Senior setter
Alexus Litts finished with a match-high 22 assists. She added seven digs and three kills. Libero
Anna Burton tallied a match-high 22 digs. She had two aces.
Kayla Turner totaled a match-high four aces.
For the match, the Jets hit .224 with 43 kills and 15 errors on 125 attempts. NU finished with eight aces.
ENMU finished hitting .132 with 37 kills and 21 errors on 121 attempts. Lauren Frye registered a team-high 13 kills and a .276 hitting percentage.
The Jets are back in action tomorrow (Oct. 10) with two matches. NU plays Texas A&M-Kingsville at 3:30 p.m. and then takes on West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. Both matches are in Canyon, Texas.
