Jets Cruise to 3-0 Win at TAMIU

LAREDO, Texas – The Newman volleyball team wrapped up second place alone in the conference with an easy 3-0 win at Texas A&M International on Thursday (Nov. 12). With the win, NU moved to 24-8 and 12-3 in the Heartland Conference.
 
The Jets made quick work of the Dustdevils in the first two sets, winning 25-16 and 25-12. In the final set, NU got a 25-23 victory for the 3-0 win.
 
In the first set, the Jets pulled out to a 6-1 advantage. NU had little trouble with TAMIU as they cruised to the 25-16 win. The Jets hit .242 with nine kills and one error on 33 attempts. The Dustdevils struggled hitting with 10 kills and 11 errors for a -.024 hitting percentage.
 
The second set was just as dominating for the Jets as they won 25-12. To start the set, NU surged out to a 13-1 advantage. The Jets finished with 10 kills and hit .182 in the second set, while the Dustdevils finished with eight kills and a .129 hitting percentage.
 
TAMIU built an early 7-4 edge in the third set, however, the Jets used a 5-0 run to take a 9-7 lead. The third set remained close, and the score was tied at 23-23 late in the set. Ashley Gonzalez put NU up 24-23 with a kill, and a block solo from Gonzalez and Jarin Braithwait gave them the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-0. NU hit .186 with 14 kills and six errors in the final set. TAMIU had 13 kills with seven errors for a .150 hitting percentage.
 
For the match, the Jets hit .202 with 33 kills and 11 errors on 109 attempts. The Dustdevils hit .080 with 31 kills and 22 errors. TAMIU struggled with four ball handling errors, six service errors and nine reception errors.
 
Gonzalez tallied a match-high 13 kills with a .458 hitting percentage. She added two blocks and two digs. Alexus Litts totaled 27 assists, also a match high. Libero Anna Burton had a team-high 14 digs. Braithwait had seven kills and eight digs. She hit .318.
 
The Jets end the regular season at St. Mary's on Saturday (Nov. 14) in San Antonio, Texas. Start time is set for 12 p.m. Live stats and video are available.
