DENVER – The Newman women's basketball team used a 28-9 third quarter to pull away for a 75-53 win at Regis College on Friday (Nov. 13) at Regis Fieldhouse in the season opener for both teams. The Jets moved to 1-0 on the season with the win.
With the score 26-25 after the first half in favor of the home team, NU used a 28-9 third quarter to pull away for a 53-35 lead, including a 10-0 run to end the period.
Kesha Bucker made a layup 11 seconds into the second half to put NU up 27-26. Newcomer
Shaunice Robinson hit a 3 less than a minute later for a 30-26 score. After a Robinson free throw,
Brianna Caldwell hit a 3-pointer for a 24-28 advantage. A layup by Robinson and a jumper from
Mali Wright increased the advantage to 38-30. The lead was 40-30 after two
Kesha Buckner free throws.
With the score 43-35, the period ended with a 10-0 spurt. Buckner made one free throw and then Robinson put in a layup.
Natalia Hausmann scored on a layup, and Wright also made a basket for a 50-35 score. Buckner made one free throw and Hausman put in another basket for the 53-35 advantage.
In the fourth period, the Jets outscored Regis, 22-18, to take the game by a 75-53 score.
The Jets shot 45.6 percent (26-57) from the field and 6-of-18 from 3 (33.3 percent). NU went 17-of-22 from the free throw line for 77.3 percent.
Regis finished at 39.6 percent (19-48). They went 4-of-16 from 3 for 25 percent.
Robinson scored a game-high 21 points and added six steals, five rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes. Caldwell came off the bench to put in 19 points on five 3s in 19 minutes. Wright totaled eight points and a team-high six rebounds.
Bay'Lee Purdy of Regis scored 19 points in 39 minutes.
