Mali Wright scored 24 points and added 10 rebounds as the Newman women's basketball team went to 2-0 with a 71-64 win at UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday (Nov. 14). With the win, the Jets move to 2-0 on the season, both wins again RMAC and regional opponents.
Wright, a junior from Sheridan, Wyo., went 9-of-16 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line for 24 points. She got 10 rebounds, including four offensive boards. She added a steal in 27 minutes.
Senior
Shaunice Robinson added 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including two 3s. She had four assists in 35 minutes.
Natalia Hausmann added 10 points off the bench.
NU trailed 50-49 going into the final period. The Jets went on to outscore UCCS, 22-14, to pull away for the 71-64 victory. At the half, UCCS was up, 32-31.
The Jets shot 46.3 percent (25-54) from the field, including 40 percent (4-10) from 3. They went 17-of-20 from the free throw line for 85 percent. NU held a 41-32 edge in rebounding.
UCCS went 25-of-65 for 36.9 percent from the field. They went 27.6 percent (8-29) from 3.
Brittany Hernandez and Shanah Leaf each had 16 points for UCCS. Jen Vigil added 12 points, and Shannon Kelly went for 10 points.
