Topeka, Kansas – The Newman Lady Jets fell short tonight 46-58 against the Washburn Ichabods. With this loss the Lady Jets move to 2-1 on the young season while the Washburn Ichabods go to 3-0.
Senior
Brianna Caldwell led the Lady Jets with a game high 16 points tonight. 12 of those 16 points came from behind the arc and the other 4 points came from the foul line. She also led the team in steals with 2 and grabbed 5 total rebounds for NU.
Senior
Shaunice Robinson was second in scoring for the Lady Jets with 13 points. She went 7-of-8 from the free throw line and the other 6 points came from the field. Robinson also dished out 2 assists on the night.
Junior
Mali Wright was third in scoring for the Lady Jets with 8 points. She went 4-of-4 from the charity stripe and the other 4 points came from the field. Wright led the team in total rebounds with 10, making her just 2 points away from a double-double.
Erica Olerich was second on the team in total rebounds, grabbing 6 for the Lady Jets.
After the 1
st period Newman trailed 7-14. In the 2
nd period Newman outscored Washburn 15-14 but still trailed 22-28 at the half. Again in the 3
rd period Newman outscored Washburn 13-12 and still trailed 35-40. In the 4
th period Washburn pulled ahead for good with an 18-11 advantage in the 4
th, making the final score 46-58.
On the night, the Lady Jets went 12-of-55 (21.8%) from the field and also went 16-of-20 (80%) from the foul line. The Lady Jets grabbed a total of 37 rebounds as well. Newman won the turnover battle by committing 13 to the Ichabods 14.
Washburn went 20-of-51 (39.2%) from the field. They went 7-of-20 (35%) from behind the arc. Erin Dohnalek led the Ichabods with 14 points while going 3-of-5 from 3. Felisha Gibbs chipped in 12 points for the Ichabods as well going a perfect 6-of-6 from the field.
The Lady Jets are back in action this Saturday (Nov. 21) for their home opener against York College at 1 p.m inside Fugate Gymnasium. There will be live video, stats and radio coverage from KGSO 1410AM will be available.
