Wichita, Kan. – The Newman women's basketball team won handily over the York College Panthers 78-43, moving NU's record to 3-1 on the season.
The Lady Jets had a dominating performance in the first half. They outscored the Panthers 23-9 in the first quarter and 25-8 in the second quarter, having the score at halftime 48-17 Newman. In the third quarter it was all Newman once again outscoring the Panthers 16-10. In the fourth quarter however, the Panthers outscored the Lady Jets 16-14. But it was a little too late for them, as Newman prevailed 78-43.
Erica Olerich had a team high in points with 14 for the afternoon. She went 6-of-7 from the field and 2-of-2 from the foul line.
Kesha Buckner and
Shaunice Robinson both had 10 points for Newman.
Iva Krstevska provided a spark off the bench by grabbing a game high 9 rebounds for the Lady Jets.
Mali Wright was in on the mix on the boards grabbing 7 rebounds for Newman.
Cierra Tjaden had a game high in assists with 5 on the afternoon. On the day, everybody on the Newman women's basketball team got a chance to play some minutes, which will provide some experience for the younger players on the team.
Newman shot 29-of-72 (40.3%) from the field and 15-of-18 (83.3%) from the free throw line. York shot 13-of-47 (27.7%) from the field and 13-of-23 (56.5%) from the free throw line. Newman dominated on the glass, outrebounding York 51-27. Newman also won the turnover battle by committing 15 to York's 25 on the afternoon. The Lady Jets were very generous to each other by dishing out 22 assists compared to York's 6.
McCorra Ford had a game high in points with 15 for the Panthers. Vanessa Espinosa and Elizabeth Maher both had 6 points for the Panthers this afternoon.
The Lady Jets are back in action this upcoming Tuesday (Nov. 24) at Fort Hays State University. The game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in Hays, Kansas. There will be live stats, video and audio from KGSO 1410AM will be available.
